The Potomac Valley
Standard Schnauzer Club

The Standard Schnauzer is a robust, heavy-set dog, sturdily built, with a dense harsh no-shed coat. A medium size dog, he is knee high and 35 to 45 pounds. The Standard Schnauzer combines a spirited temperament with extreme reliability. Excellent with children and friends, he is still the guardian of his home and family.

Application for Membership to the PVSSC - Applications require the recommendation of at least one existing PVSSC Member - Requires Adobe Acrobat.

We need your help - Please complete a health survey for your Schnauzers

HELP! The Standard Schnauzer Club of America has not received enough responses to its 2008 SS Health Survey to make the results valid. If you have not yet submitted your dog(s) information, PLEASE do so now! The deadline is June 30 if we want the data to be analyzed by autumn (the original goal). Every PVSSC member should participate!

Note - we need info from HEALTHY DOGS as well as dogs which have had health problems. Do not be put off by the apparent complexity of the survey -- if your dog has no health issues, then just tick the "NONE" box half-way down the form.

The information will be stripped of any identification clues and analyzed by an independent statistician so privacy is assured.

Only with wide participation can we identify possible health problems and protect our wonderful breed.

Rescue Committee - A message from Drake's new Family

In November I started looking around on the internet for a Standard Schnauzer that could be a playmate for my 4 year old Standard Schnauzer Zee. Much to my surprise I found an article on the Potomac Valley Standard Schnauzer Club web site that a SS had been rescued from a puppy mill and needed a home. On the web site was a picture of Drake and a description. Drake seemed to be the perfect playmate for Zee so I contacted Pat and Pete White and I was delighted to hear that Drake was still available for adoption.

Pat and Pete had made considerable progress with Drake, but when I got him he still had many trust issues. These issues are slowly melting away. For example, when we first got him home he would not allow us to touch him in any way. In order to put a leash on him we sometimes had to resort to cornering him, but now Drake will come when called and most of the time allows you to clip his leash on. Drake enjoys going on walks and surprisingly walks very nicely on a leash.

I know that Drake has accepted me…. he follows me everywhere and allows me to pet him (90% of the time). This weekend he made amazing progress.

I had been working on training him to sit and much to my surprise he did his first unassisted sit, I was thrilled and I gave him many treats to celebrate the occasion. You could see on his face how very proud he was of this accomplishment. (See photo)

From the beginning Drake has been a wonderful playmate for Zee. Drake and Zee will run after each other in the backyard and it is a sight to behold. (See photo) They have invented many tagging games; one I have named King of the Deck - aren’t those Standard Schnauzers clever!! He also plays very nicely with my miniature schnauzer and another miniature schnauzer that I am currently fostering. They wrestle around on the rug and although Drake is twice the size of the miniature schnauzers you can tell that he is putting out tremendous effort to be gentle.

Drake is a smart, playful and sometimes mischievous boy and we are all enjoying watching him bloom into a really fine dog. We would like to thank everyone involved in his rescue and allowing us to bring him into our family.

Great News!! "Mature" Mother & Daughter Standard Schnauzers have found Loving Home

Update March 23, 2007

As some of you may know, Cynthia Lorr of Von Molloy standard schnauzers died suddenly last Fall. She owned 5 standard schnauzers which were turned over to PVSSC Rescue Committee. Three of the younger schnauzers were placed rather quickly in new homes, however finding a home for the two older females Steinige age 9 and Pandora age 12 (a mother and daughter) proved to be a bit of a challenge. These two dogs are very very sweet and quite attached to each other. They share a bed and the stick by each other's side during the day. The rescue committee wanted to make sure they were placed together in the same home.

Due to the diligent efforts of the club, and the generous efforts of Georgia and Jean who fostered the two dogs for an extended period of time, an adoptive home has been found! Steinige and Pandora have been placed with a family in Pennsylvania.

Thank you Georgia, Jean, Emily, Rose and all the other members of the PVSSC who contributed their time and effort, homes and transportation to the successful placement for all of Cynthia's dogs.
